What to Expect During Your Tattoo Session

Before The Session

Getting a tattoo can be both exciting and perhaps anxiety-inducing for some, especially if it's your first time. Here, we’ll walk you through the typical flow of a session and share some helpful tips to make sure you have the best experience possible.

Prior to the Session:
Your artist will review your design, provide any feedback, and give an estimate. You will then be asked to place a deposit to secure your appointment. It’s important to note that design work typically begins before the appointment.

Larger, more complex designs: These require extensive drafting considerations. An artist may schedule a consultation to complete this ahead of your session.

Smaller, simpler designs: These still require time for correct formatting, sizing, and placement.

Note: Artists typically will not send design previews ahead of the appointment as it's ideal to discuss and make any changes in person.

Preparing For Your Session

To make your tattooing experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible, please follow these guidelines:

Arrive Early: Give yourself plenty of time to get to the studio and avoid booking any major travel on the same day as your appointment. This will help ensure you don’t feel stressed or rushed before your session begins.

Dress Comfortably: Wear loose-fitting clothing that will allow you to sit for long periods. You may also want to bring a change of clothes for areas near the tattoo, in case of sweat or ink transfer.

Leave the Entourage at Home: While friends, family, and partners can join you for check-in, it’s best if they don’t attend the session with you. This will reduce distractions and allow you to focus on the process with your artist without pressure from others.

Check-in with the Front Desk: Upon arrival, the front desk will greet you and provide a consent form for you to sign. Feel free to ask any questions you may have ahead of the session.

Meet with Your Artist: You will be introduced to your artist in a calm and welcoming atmosphere where you can express any concerns and review the design. Your artist will ensure that you’re comfortable and informed throughout the process.

Design Review, Placement, Adjustments

Your artist will create a draft design and collaborate with you to ensure it meets your vision. The ideal size and placement will be discussed and adjustments can be made before the tattoo begins.

While an artist has years of experience and bases their recommendations on what they believe will work best, you should feel comfortable voicing your opinions, asking questions, and taking your time to review and make sure you’re completely happy with your design. Look at the stencil in the mirror and discuss any changes with your artist.

Tattooing Begins

You may need some time to adjust to the feeling of being tattooed during the first 10 minutes or so. Your artist will help ease you into the session and check in with you regarding your comfort level. Depending on the artist’s preference and the size/complexity of your design, you may take breaks during the session. Keep in mind that the longer the break, the more the tattooing process may hurt as your adrenaline levels and pain tolerance may fluctuate before restarting.

It’s also important to keep your blood sugar levels consistent by snacking and drinking during your session. Finally, try to stay as still and mindful as possible to prevent any unexpected movement or discomfort. Some people find it helpful to read, listen to music, or chat with their artist. Remember, everyone’s experience with getting a tattoo is unique, so be sure to communicate.

Towards The End of Your Session

Your artist may photograph or record a video of the process and completed tattoo. If you prefer not to have your tattoo shared, please let your artist know. You can also ask for a personal copy of the photo and/or video if you’d like.

After the tattoo is finished, your artist may apply a protective covering, which could be a clear adhesive bandage, padded bandage, or temporary plastic wrap, depending on the artist’s preference. Your artist will provide you with aftercare instructions, and our staff is always available to answer any additional questions you may have. You can also refer to previous posts or our website for more information.

It’s customary to tip your artist 15% to 25%, and thoughtful gifts are always appreciated. Finally, don’t forget to send your artist healed photos so they can address any concerns for touch-ups and improve their technique.

By following these simple guidelines, you’ll be able to fully enjoy your tattooing experience and walk away with a design you love.
